Day 1: Getting started

We were off to a good start today after Bob from Brandon Tool Hire (Hall Road, Norwich) very kindly gave us the use of a turf-cutter for the day (free of charge!). Bob, you’re a star.

As school finished at 3pm, 20 eager children (armed with an assortment of spades, forks and wellie-boots) congregated on the edge of the playing field – the site of our new garden.

We measured out 6 strips (1.5m x 7m) and proceeded to use our wonderful new machine to peel away the 30 year old sports field! The turf cutter was incredibly efficient. I dread to think how long it would have taken us without it.

Revealing the earth beneath the grass led to lots of screaming from the kids as they encountered plenty of earthworms. It was as much as I could do to stop them from chopping them into little bits with their new spades, explaining that worms are a gardener’s friend.

All the children were really hands on, and even some of the parents got their hands dirty as they came to collect the kids at 4pm. Well done to everyone for getting us off to a great start.

We’ve lots more work yet to do, and lots more fun to look forward to.

Meet the gang!

Meet the gang!

Welcome to the blog for the Newton Flotman Primary School Gardening Club. My name’s Caroline, and you can contact me via the school if you need to, or just post any comments on the blog at the bottom of each entry. I’d especially love to hear from the gardening club members.

We hope to document the story of our creation of a new garden at the school, the fun we have along the way, and maybe even some of the things that we grow. We’ll be updating this regularly, so please keep coming back.
